Number porting is the ability to switch phone service providers without having to say goodbye to your existing phone number.

How does number porting work?
Your current provider has to give the green light for your existing number to be transferred to your new carrier. Once the new provider gets the go-ahead, they'll handle the activation process for that number, so you can continue using it with their service.
The number porting process shouldn't take too long, but it can vary from provider to provider.

FAQs: Number porting
How much does phone number porting cost?
Chalkboard doesn’t charge any porting fees, whether you are porting numbers in or out. However, some companies may have porting fees and early termination fees, so make sure you ask your carrier for details.
How long does it take to port a phone number?
Porting to a virtual or internet-based phone system usually takes 5-7 business days. Generally, you’re still able to use your phone number while the port is taking place. Just make sure not to cancel the service with your old provider while the port is in process.

Will my current phone number be active during the port?
Yes. During the transfer process, your number will remain active during the process. You’ll be able to use your phone number with your original carrier up until the port date. At that point, the number moves to your new carrier.
Does porting your phone number cancel service?
In most cases, porting your phone number out will cancel your service with your old provider. We recommend confirming that once your number is ported. Don’t cancel your service while the porting process is happening, as that might disrupt the port and leave you without a business phone number.
Can I port my number away from Chalkboard?
If you were assigned a number that you love from Chalkboard, but you’ve decided to leave us for now, the good news is you are able to take your Chalkboard number with you. You'll just need to port your number away to a different carrier.
